The first table shows our Campsite/CL/CS/Aire/Twernt park-up costs, with the average £cost per night by country, this is a summary of the second table which contains a line item for each stop-over showing the location, the cost and a rating which is obviously subjective but is based on our leaning towards peaceful, quiet sites in great locations.

The £ cost where €’s were charged is derived from the exchange rate that we received at the time of exchanging £’s for €’s. The rate is updated with each Forex to reflect the average exchange rate for balances at hand plus new exchanges. We use FairFX who supply us with a Visa Debit Card as well as some ‘liquid’ €-funds.

Forex rates received have been:

8 August 2014: 1.2373

8 August 2014: 1.24

1 October 2014: 1.2575

1 October 2014: 1.2605

22 December 2014 1.2474

21 January 2015 1.2759

The rates used to calculate £-cost are:

From 8 August 2014: 1.2374

From 1 October 2014: 1.2492

From 22 December 2014 1.2482

    • Cheers H. ’tis a simple thing reflecting our personal view – measured against peace, quiet, area, site facilities, cleanliness and ‘gut’ feeling. Shame about Honfleur, great place spoilt only by the mozzies but we had get payback somehow and our ‘rating’ was the only weapon we had!

  1. Tut Tut im sure you could find some nice places for free,Think about the savings, tis costing you more than diesel omg.
Good to see your costings though mate but what about your food budget? lol
I bet you have been eating out all the time and shopping at m&S instead of lidls. lol

    • Costing more than diesel? I had not realised that – I just record the facts; haven’t had time to interpret them yet.
Food budget is not my department – I’m lucky to get access to these other costs – it IS my wallet with MY debit cards, but I have to ask to use it at gas stations! Amanda says we spend between £60 and £100 a week on a lidl shop including dog food and other paraphernalia (mintoes!). She did say that staying at the Portimao aire (£2.00/night) meant that we could live here for less than £100 a week. The last time I did that was 40 or more years ago, that’s got to be a result – one welsh lady that we spoke to today has lived here for 18 years and she told us that we should remember that many, many locals live on an income of 400-500 EURO’s a month but VAT is higher than in the UK and utility bills are about the same as in the UK. Don’t think their heating bills are anywhere near yours though…..now……why would that be?……..23c’s here today and signing off…………..towel please…..thanks…….open those windows……..Yes, I know it’s almost 10pm but I need them open……..Ooops, sorry, are you still there Coola?… Bye for now Kevin (& Corina) xx

  2. Nice report but a bit high on pitch costs , could do with looking at some sites for lower costs. We have had some excelent stops in uk with a max of £7.50 with ehu and facilities but at pubs and they were quiet not noisy. Just posted free wifi on 365 wich might help you and there is also an ap you can down load . Most are in spain and france . You must be putting weight on with the amount you spend at lidls lucky if we get through that in two weeks. Less weight to carry and increase in mpg ha ha . Have a safe and happy onward trip .

    • Hi HP! Good to see you on here, didn’t know that you read my bloggering creations! We’ve pretty much had wall-to-wall wifi everywhere except Portimao. EHU + wifi became a ‘must haves’ once I realised how miserable life is without them! In fairness, the EHU requirement is due to needing the feed for my ‘desktop’ PC, our inverter isn’t quite up to the job. We could invest in a larger output inverter for next year but will most likely opt to stay only at EHU sites – larger than 300W inverters have to be ‘fitted in’ and not portable as ours is; also Sargent (the PSU manufacturer) do not recommend using inverters rated higher than 150W. Safer therefore to seek out EHU sites and swerve an inverter solution for my PC – I have no desire whatsoever to be ‘do without’ my PC!
I agree on the high-ish pitch fees, these are partly due to us being on a learning curve – I’m sure that they will reduce as we become more experienced but we don’t ‘do’ truck parks or aires where you park ‘window to window’, etc. We seek out places that give us some ‘breathing space’ as well as a good ‘feel’, ambiance, etc. Whist we are living full time in the moho, it’s borne of a desire to travel as adventurously as suits our tastes, we’re not FTW, avoid all taxes, etc. type of people!
Not sure where you got the Lidls spend from as I haven’t reported our food costs, we spend a similar sum to what we’ve always spent or so I’m told. But you are right that I’ve put weight on during this trip – 9lbs – and I’m now on a mission to lose it! – Turkey-less xmas may be just around the corner! – not!
Last I recall is that you are in Germany (your second home!) – warmer down here for the next 2-3 months! Take care.

      • Hi Noggin , did you get to the Orange grove ? the only let down is the 3amp elec . Wifi is ok a bit slow but with a booster should be ok . I had no problem . Got Lulu back but she then the cam belt went . When your on the wa back on the A23 in Spain the stop at 177 is a hotel with the caffee open all night .

      • Hi HP, didn’t make Orange Grove due to having told Dai that I would email him about a place and then we didn’t have WiFi – we tried 5 or 6 places as we travelled north and they were all fails for one reason or another – hadn’t intended to be so far north but just kept going until we found somewhere. We did try to get on at the San Antonio aire at Altea but it was full, so we moved north – 7+ hours on the road that day! Missed meeting up with Wendy & Iain as well.
Sorry to hear about LuLu, I know she means a lot to you both, hope that you get her fixed or find a new LuLu soon – are you back in the Notts/Derby area or did you go back to Germany? Either way, must be a bit cold, hope you’re managing to stay warm.

  3. Hi Noggin , back in uk Notts /Derby area made it back and just waiting for the estimate for the insurance , Calpe and denia have some good spots dont know if you tried them . Sliver drifter was in Calpe a while back . . have a safe trip really cold here .have made some marmalade with the free oranges that we got .

    • Glad that you got back safely HP, hope that you get sorted soon, saw those spots at Calpe but moved on for EHU/WiFi, I heard that you can be fined for picking oranges from the public area orange trees – what a waste, it seems the local councils want them there for display purposes – been tempted to go scrumping a few times. Really bad winds the last 2 or 3 days here in Peniscola but still possible to sunbathe in sheltered places. Staying here until the weather improves in France and then home for Easter. Good luck with LuLu and I hope she can be rescued.

  4. Just go scrumping there are enough trees about especially on the small lanes. The wild oranges are the best used to pick the lemons in Calpe just as you come in near the boat . It used to be a restaurant years ago but the lemon trees are still there . They make good marmalade never paid for oranges or lemons in spain . Don,t knoe which way you are driving back but there is a good stop 23km past pottiers with free ehu and water it is an air just past Le Mille Pattes bar restaurant on the D347 86330 Angliers .
